CMI 3315: Intro to Web Design

Course Description

A computer in the desert at sunset

The goal of this course is to demystify the underpinnings of the interactive technologies you use every day and to prepare you for the likely scenario that a media job will require that you understand computers beyond using Adobe Creative Cloud. From content publishing to design and marketing, internet technology literacy is a crucial 21st century skill.

In order to accomplish this, you will learn to write HTML5 and CSS3, use the interface prototyping app Figma, and gain understanding of the principles of information architecture, interaction design, and interface design.

How to Participate

  • Class website: schedule, resources, and assignments descriptions
  • Microsoft Teams Channel: Asking for help
  • Blackboard: taking quizzes, submit assignments, viewing announcements, and checking your grades

Class Structure

Over the next five weeks, you'll be building your technical and design skills. It's going to be fast and intense. And there's no time to fall behind.

Each week has two deadlines: Wednesday and Sunday. You may finish a given week's work early but new assignments will not post until Monday mornings.

There are video tutorials, textbook readings, and other supplemental material. Expect to spend 15-18 hours a week watching, reading, and working on exercises and assignments.

Get started early and ask questions because it’s impossible to succeed if you wait until the last minute. (Trust me!)

My role is to assist you in the web development process by providing resources, answering questions, and helping you work through your code.

Need help? If you want to video chat, I'm available 9—11 AM on Wednesdays and Fridays. Send a message on Teams and I'll pop on. Otherwise, you can either schedule a time to chat or you can just post questions to the Teams channel. I'll try to answer by the end of the day or the next morning.

5. Ask for Help

Students who ask for and provide help in Teams consistently do better.

Here are some good ways of phrasing questions so that your classmates and I can give you precise feedback.

Whenever possible, copy-paste code or a link to codepen. Screenshots (or photos of your laptop screen) are more difficult to work with but sometimes I'll ask for them.
